Understanding your vehicle's Limited slip differential oil (if equipped) and the importance of its maintenance
A limited slip differential is a set of gears that lets your vehicle's drive wheels turn at different speeds to prevent binding in turns. It includes components to limit wheelspin when one of the wheels completely loses traction, allowing the wheel with traction to propel the vehicle. Rear-wheel-drive (RWD), 4x4 and all-wheel-drive (AWD) vehicles have a differential housing separate from the transaxle. Limited-slip differential oil provides lubrication, specific friction properties and heat dissipation for internal components. Over time, heat and contaminants can cause the limited-slip differential oil to lose its properties. It is recommended to inspect the differential for any leaks and check the fluid level regularly as well as change the oil at the specified intervals.
